John, if we want to elect leaders who will keep us safe and healthy, we must vote. And we shouldn't have to risk our lives to do so!

During this time of uncertainty, we need to make voting as easy, accessible, and safe as possible. Luckily, a bipartisan election reform bill has passed the state House and is awaiting action in the Senate.

The bill moved through the House in two days, and it could move quickly in the Senate, so your senator needs to hear from you today!

House Bill 1169 accomplishes several things to help more North Carolinians vote this fall, like creating an online absentee ballot request system and a tracking system to make sure your vote counts, providing more funding for county boards of elections to make in-person voting safer and more efficient, and requiring only one person to witness absentee ballots.

But it needs a few common-sense amendments to make our democracy even stronger, like:

Making Election Day a state holiday so we can space out voting booths in larger locations which would normally be in use on a Tuesday in November, and so that more people can serve as poll workers instead of our vulnerable elderly population.
Making it easier and less expensive to return absentee ballots by providing paid return postage and funding for counties to set up secure drop boxes. This way, fewer people will have to risk contracting the disease by going to a polling place or a store to buy a stamp.
Extending the voter registration deadline now that online registration is available for DMV customers and forms can be processed more quickly.
