Email from VoteWater Sign now to Rescue the River of Grass More than a petition — this is a movement —————————— Friend, Petitions are a dime a dozen — but Rescue the River of Grass is NOT your typical petition. By signing on, you’re joining a movement, a groundswell of people who care about clean water and are rallying around a clear solution: BUY. THE. LAND. Acquiring at least 100,000 acres south of Lake Okeechobee is not a new idea, it’s an overdue idea. It’s the cornerstone of Everglades restoration — the ONLY way we will prevent harmful Lake O discharges and restore enough clean water to the southern Everglades and Florida Bay. We have the money to get it done. Thanks to voter-approved Amendment 1, more than $1.3 billion a year will flow to the state’s Land Acquisition Trust Fund for the next nine years. The cash comes from fees on real estate transactions. Buying and restoring this land in the Everglades Agricultural Area will: Reestablish adequate clean water flows to the Everglades and Florida Bay Prevent harmful discharges to the St. Lucie, Caloosahatchee rivers and Lake Worth Lagoon Provide water storage and treatment capacity to meet court-ordered water quality standards for the southern Everglades Ensure clean water for millions of Floridians How often do we have a clear solution and the money to get it done? There’s also urgency; industrial sugarcane corporations are seeking approval for a rock mine on thousands of acres south of Lake Okeechobee. Let’s seize this prime moment to Rescue the River of Grass. Be part of the solution by signing the petition (along with every person in your household)! SIGN NOW P.S.
