Everything happening this week at DSA-LA

Help us send socialist students to YDSA Winter Conference!

Let's get YDSA'ers to Chicago! 15 undergrad socialist organizers from the Los Angeles YDSA area are planning to attend the national YDSA winter conference in Chicago, Illinois this coming February. This includes campus YDSA leaders from UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona, Occidental College, and more. Let's support the next generation of socialist organizers at WinterCon!

We're raising funds to chip in for our comrades' travel and accommodation expenses, and we need your help! We're looking to raise $2,000 in total - can you pitch in $25?

🦋 DSA-LA Immigration Justice 🦋
Working Group

The Immigration Justice Working Group is organizing to prepare for and respond to intensified immigration enforcement in Los Angeles. By joining, you can help protect our families, neighbors, and communities from unjust immigration arrests and deportations.

The group will organize trainings, coordinate rapid response efforts, plan direct actions, and develop strategies to defend immigrant communities across Los Angeles. The working group is open to all members.

This Week in DSA-LA...

DSA-LA Community Dine-In at The Original Pantry

Wednesday, February 26 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Come support restaurant workers at The Original Pantry Cafe as they bargain for a new contract with UNITE HERE Local 11. After they started bargaining, the restaurant has announced the possibility of closing. Instead, we show up for their demands which include job security and continued union representation as the restaurant went up for sale last August.

DSA-LA Joins UPTE and AFSCME on Strike!

Thursday, February 27 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Labor Committee, the Higher Education Labor Circle, and the Westside Branch go to UCLA in solidarity with the joint UPTE and AFSCME strike!

UPTE healthcare, research, and technical workers are going on a strike to bring attention to the short staffing crisis impacting UC hospitals and campuses, as well attempts by university administration to restrict the rights of unions to protest!

Meanwhile, AFSCME 3299 has also called for a strike as their service and patient care members face unlawful intimidation. Their bargaining seeks to deal with inflation, demands affordable healthcare, and fights for housing benefits.

Two strikes in one! Who wouldn’t join?

Political Education Committee Meeting

Thursday, February 27 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

New and long-time comrades are invited to join us for this monthly committee business meeting. While we’ll share updates (and invitations to get involved) across active & developing projects, the majority of this meeting will focus on the following:

  • Reflection and discussion on The Myth and Irrationality of Black Capitalism (9.5 pgs), from James Bogg’s book Racism and the Class Struggle: Further Pages from a Black Workers Notebook. In recognition of Black History month, we’re looking forward to learning from this 1960s writing by James Boggs – a famous Black Marxist auto worker, militant, and thinker.
  • Decision-making on proposals for socialist film screenings open to the public.

You can read the Political Education Committee’s mission and goals here.

Power to the Tenants / Housing & Homelessness Committee Meeting

Thursday, February 27 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This is our bi-weekly meeting for DSA-LA’s priority campaign on housing. We’ll plan our current campaigns for Local Rent Control and discuss current housing issues.

DSA 101: San Fernando Valley

Saturday, March 1 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Are you new or newly returning to DSA? To Los Angeles? To the Left? Then join us for DSA 101!  At this orientation, we’ll talk about what capitalism is, how it functions, and why socialism is ideologically opposed to it. Participants will also learn about the history of our organization and our chapter in particular, the current projects we’re working on, and how you can get involved. This is not a lecture, but a meeting for new and veteran organizers to ground ourselves in socialist theory and discuss together how we can put it into action. We’re excited to chat with you! All are welcome! We’ll meet at Immanuel Presbyterian in Koreatown (3300 Wilshire Blvd). This location is accessible via bus and the Wilshire/Vermont Metro station. There’s also parking behind the building.

Mass Meeting: CD13 Town Hall

Saturday, March 8 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join us for a town hall meeting with Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez on Saturday March 8th. This is an opportunity for both facilitated conversation and open Q&A to discuss developments since December 2022, when our chapter worked to elect a DSA-LA member in the district. We delve into changes within districts, challenges, and upcoming opportunities given the current political terrain. We particularly encourage CD 13 residents to sign up, although it will be open to our members in other districts as well. This event is for DSA-LA members only, and snacks and drinks will be provided.
