Elon Musk, acting on Trump’s illegal overreach to slash programmatic funding through mass firings and shut down government agencies, is playing a dangerous game with the lives of federal workers, their families, and also the American public at large. Already Musk and Trump’s actions have led to the layoff of thousands of federal workers – everyone from those who help run Head Start to air traffic controllers who help keep air travel safe to federal workers in charge of safeguarding our nuclear weapons. The Trump Administration’s illegal actions in shuttering agencies is not just a bureaucratic nightmare - they are a direct threat to the lives of everyday families.

Since January 20th, the Administration’s indiscriminate and illegal actions to shut down agencies and lay off staff have had real, and potentially deadly, consequences for all of us:

• The Administration of Children and Families (ACF) is seeing dozens of terminations in the early childhood offices, impacting the basic functioning of child care and Head Start programs for families across the nation. 
• Hundreds of layoffs have occurred at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) impacting everything from scientists tasked with helping local and state officials respond to outbreaks; employees who ensure that medical devices for patients with cancer and diabetes are safe; and researchers working on finding cures to cancer, heart disease, and other diseases. • The Department of Education has laid off special education and rehabilitation services, and federal student aid staff. And Trump has revealed his wishes to eliminate the Department of Education all together.   
• Abruptly and unjustly fired hardworking civilian servants and their families have been left scrambling, some with life threatening consequences like the USAID employee and his pregnant wife who were denied the medical evacuation she urgently needed - putting both his wife and their baby’s life at risk, in addition to the families around the world who urgently the humanitarian assistance that USAID provides. • The IRS is expecting up to 10,000 employees being laid off right at the start of tax season, delaying tax returns and making it harder to catch tax cheats–many of whom are wealthy corporations. [3]

The list of impacted areas goes on and on. Everything from the hotline to assist veterans in crisis to National Park Service workers are being impacted by the rampant and thoughtless firings.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump have taken a sledge hammer to our national government and no areas are safe – which means eventually a service that impacts you and your family might see delays, cuts, or even elimination. They want to dismantle federal agencies so we won’t be able to access the opportunities and tools we need to live, thrive, and support our families. And all of this is in order to have enough money to provide billionaires and wealthy corporations with a $4.5 trillion tax cut.

Despite empty campaign promises, none of these firings are helping reduce costs for our families or grow the economy. And in some parts of the country, it will actually harm local economies because despite what the Trump Administration wants you to think, four out of 5 federal employees live and work outside the Washington, D.C. area.
