Hello,

In this week’s edition, I pose thoughts on a theory of dreams and on living properly in the world. Then, I talk with neuroscientist, bestselling author, and PBS presenter, Dr. David Eagleman, about the brain’s rewiring, decision-making, and perception-forming capabilities. From the archives, I revisit a portion of a conversation I had with Dr. Carol Swain about the nature of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Advice

Learn And Understand How To Live In The World

The theory that dreams are merely the consequence of random neuronal firing is absolutely absurd, or so it seems to me, because there is nothing random about dreams. Dreams are not like snow on a television screen or static on a radio. Rather, they are structured, complex, and complicated. After all, people have coherent, fully developed dreams with a perfect narrative structure. They are fully developed in some sense.

Taking the phenomena of dreams seriously is much more useful. For example, if you dream of the future, then you might try to make it into a reality. Or maybe you dream up a nightmare and attempt to make it into a reality. People do that too if they are hellbent on revenge, full of hatred and resentment. Those are dreams that become manifestations of terrible fantasies. They are powerful.

So where does the information in dreams come from? I think it comes from watching the patterns everyone acts out. Representations of those patterns are a part of our cultural history. Canonical patterns of being that are embedded in stories of good and evil, romance, and so on, deeply affect us because they represent what we will act out in the world. We can learn and know more about ourselves when we pay attention to those representations alongside our own behavioral patterns.

If you are going to live in the world, and you are going to live properly, you must ask a fundamental question: What does “properly” mean and where should the answer be sought? That is what everyone wants to know — how to live in the world. This is a question for all of us, a question we must continue to ask ourselves, to observe in others, and to abstract out across time.

** Rape Gangs And The Shadow Of Multiculturalism

The issue of sadistic mass rape on British soil has reared its ugly head once again, this time on the international front. There are many reasons, but one is fundamental: the increasingly desperate need for serious discussion about the perils of an unthinking and self-aggrandizing multiculturalism — a word that, in itself, is a primarily cliched advertisement for the self-proclaimed admirable and wondrous tolerance of the progressive hypocrites on the Left and Right alike. It is time for us in the free world to look at human beings and their various cultures as they truly are, and not as the good thinkers wish, and then so dangerously insist that they must be.

How Your Brain Rewires, Makes Decisions, And Shapes Your Reality | Dr. David Eagleman | EP 523

In this episode, I am joined by neuroscientist, bestselling author, and PBS presenter, Dr. David Eagleman. We discuss brain plasticity, how perception works, whether free will exists (and if it is superordinate), how willingness to engage with higher entropy indicates sophistication of thought, and the preconditions for forming a Ulysses contract.

The Destructive Nature Of DEI

Last summer, I talked with Dr. Carol Swain, who is a political scientist, legal scholar, and retired Vanderbilt University political science and law professor. We discussed the nature of diversity, equity, and inclusion at length, and her personal experiences add significantly to this topic, which she discusses in this portion of our conversation. She is conservative but did not think of herself as so during her undergraduate studies, even while critiquing affirmative action in her senior paper. With reverence, Dr. Swain speaks to the immense benefits that came from the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which allowed for equal opportunity — to succeed or fail. She chose to work hard and become an honor student. We converse about the difference between equity and equal opportunity, and she explains why she has confidence racial and ethnic minorities will rise to meet high standards.
