Friend -
his has been a brutal winter and many of us are struggling to pay for skyrocketing gas and electric bills. Electricity costs have gone up over 30 percent in the last decade according to government data, while prices for natural gas have increased 44 percent! For everyone but the richest people in America, that’s way behind the growth in wages.
But help may be out there – the federal government’s LIHEAP program may be able to help you pay your heating bill.
LIHEAP (the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a federally funded program available through the states that helps families struggling with their heating or cooling bills. For eligible households, LIHEAP can:
Help pay your monthly electric or gas bill.
Help you weatherize your home with better insulation.
Help pay for repairs or upgrades to your furnace or air conditioner.
Help with emergency payments in a crisis
Working America is here to help you navigate the LIHEAP program. Visit Working America’s LIHEAP Guide to learn whether you qualify for assistance and how to apply:
LIHEAP is just one of the ways that the federal government helps working people. These benefits and many others – from Medicare to home loans to student aid – are made possible by a federal budget that asks corporations and the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes. Do you want to learn about other programs offered by the government that may be able to help you? Check out the “Get Help” section of Working America’s website for our guides to government benefits.
We’ll be adding new guides for navigating the economy throughout the year. Stay tuned!
