February is American Heart Month: Take Charge of Your Heart Health

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.? That’s why February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart health and the importance of taking proactive steps to protect your heart.

Heart disease doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of lifestyle choices and risk factors that build up over time—things like poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and stress. But the good news is, heart disease is preventable. Simple habits like eating more fruits and vegetables, staying active, managing stress, and getting regular check-ups can have a profound impact on your heart health.

As part of American Heart Month, GCHD staff celebrated National Wear Red Day, by wearing red to show support for the fight against heart disease. The day was a powerful reminder of the importance of heart health, and it was inspiring to see our staff come together in solidarity to raise awareness about cardiovascular health, particularly in women.

Wearing red was just one small way we could help bring attention to the fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. We’re grateful to have participated in such an impactful day and are committed to continuing the conversation about prevention, early detection, and heart-healthy living.

This American Heart Month, take a moment to think about your heart. Are you doing everything you can to protect it? If not, we invite you to make your heart health a priority—and we’re here to help.

Become a patient at Coastal Health & Wellness today, and let us work with you to keep your heart strong for years to come. Your heart deserves it!

Schedule your appointment today by calling 409.938.2234 and take the first step toward a happier, healthier heart.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, February 7

In observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the Galveston County Health District (GCHD) staff participated in two impactful community events aimed at raising awareness and providing vital health resources.

On February 7, 2025, GCHD joined forces with local partners in Texas City to engage, educate, and empower the community in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Held at 729 5th Ave N, the event offered free HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C testing, along with glucose testing for diabetes screening and blood pressure readings. Attendees also received valuable health information and resources.

A few days later, on February 11, 2025, GCHD participated in another event at the College of the Mainland, where they connected with over 100 students and faculty. At this event, GCHD offered free HIV and syphilis testing, HCV testing, and PrEP education. The event also provided food and a chance for attendees to learn about community health resources and services in the area.

These events were a reminder that we are in this together, working to raise awareness, eliminate barriers, and encourage healthier communities. GCHD remains committed to promoting health, breaking stigma, and supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS in Black communities.

Don't get wiped out by the flu this year

The flu is still here, and spreading in our community, but it's not too late to get your flu vaccine to protect against the virus.

Most people who get sick with the flu will have a mild illness, however, the flu can make chronic health problems worse. Flu vaccines are the best protection against the flu, and its potentially serious complications.

People 6 months and older should be vaccinated against the flu. Vaccination is especially important in high-risk groups including those ages 65 and older, pregnant women, young children and those with chronic health conditions who are at higher risk for complications or even death if they get the flu.

Visit the GCHD Immunizations Clinic at 9850-B Emmett F Lowry Expressway,
Suite B-104 to receive your flu vaccine.
