Dear John,
It is difficult to watch an unelected “co-president” show uncontained joy at the pain inflicted, at his direction, throughout the country and the world. Fired career civil servants who have dedicated themselves to public service now worry whether they can find a new job, obtain health insurance, and pay their mortgage. Around the world, vital international food aid and medications are cut off while, at home, research funds for cancer, Alzheimer's, and heart disease are frozen.
For co-president Musk, this was reason to celebrate by strutting across the stage at a convention, wielding a chain saw. It was impossible to see that image without wondering how there could be such a vacuum of humanity and empathy, and whether, indeed, cruelty is the point.
LDAD is continuing its efforts to engage the legal profession and the public in responding to this perilous time for the rule of law in the United States. We have many projects underway and continue to speak out regularly.
Last week, LDAD co-founder and former two-term MA Attorney General Scott Harshbarger was the featured speaker at a program sponsored by Floridians for Democracy. We are pleased to share a link to his inspiring presentation: Sleepwalking into Autocracy [[link removed]]
The chair of LDAD's executive committee, Evan Falchuk, wrote an important article for the Fulcrum, asking the question we all must answer: A Time to Choose Sides [[link removed]] [[link removed]] [[link removed]] . It is a reminder that the American public remains committed to the rule of law and the Constitution.
It is up to us to let the world understand that we care. Fortunately, that is starting to happen. Voters across the political spectrum, attending congressional town hall meetings across the country, are beginning to express dismay, even anger, at the lawless turn taken by the co-president’s activities, cheered on by the elected President.
LDAD will continue to use every avenue we have to do our part. We hope everyone does the same.
