Legislative Update – February 24, 2025

Neighbors,

It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at the Capitol as we begin to meet in committees and on the floor, author and hold hearings on legislation, and connect with advocates and activists who come to Saint Paul to make their voices heard.

One major milestone for new legislators is introducing their first bill. I was proud to introduce my first bills last week, which are focused on improving our city and community!

I introduced legislation funding water distribution infrastructure [ [link removed] ] improvements for the City of Minneapolis and a bill to support the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority’s efforts to provide deeply affordable housing [ [link removed] ] units, which I learned about during our visit to Spring Manor earlier this year.

I’ve also been proud to coauthor many important bills, including protecting free elections, the Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment, funding for child and family services in Minneapolis, expanding energy assistance programs, and more!

You can see a full list of bills I’ve authored and coauthored here [ [link removed] ].

Standing up for our Values

Right now, Republicans have a one-seat advantage on the House floor and in committees. If we return to a 67-67 tie following a March 11 special election, the agreed upon co-governing agreement will go into effect.

In just that short time, Republicans have moved forward with their unpopular agenda at a lightning pace. In the committees I served on, we’ve seen bills that attempt to roll back reproductive freedoms, repeal key provisions in Minnesota’s Clean Energy by 2040 goals, and deny health care coverage to our undocumented neighbors.

I want you to know that my colleagues and I will not let the Republicans succeed in these efforts. Any bill requires 68 votes to pass in the House, meaning bipartisan support is required, and these unpopular, extreme bills will not find support among our caucus or in the DFL-controlled Senate.

I will continue to bring all of District 62B with me into our committee work and fight back against Republicans attempting to repeal these hard-fought victories for our community.

Capitol Conversations

One of the best parts of my job so far has been seeing community members come out to the Capitol to meet with me, testify in committee, and rally around the issues they care about!

I’ve met with constituents from Unidos, the Minnesota Social Service Administration (MSSA), Thomas Allen Care Services, some MFT teachers, physicians from Hennepin County Medical Center and the Minnesota Medical Association, and advocates from Parents in Community Action. (and those were just the ones I remembered to take photos with!)

Mahamoud Constituent Meetings

If you or someone you know is going to be at the Capitol or would like to find a time to meet with me, please reach out to my office by emailing your request to [email protected].
