News from Representative Bera

Dear John,

I wanted to take a moment to update you on my work in Congress and discuss the challenges we’re facing as a nation.

Over the past month, many of you have reached out with concerns about the new Administration’s policies and how they impact Sacramento County. I hear you, and I share your commitment to standing up against extreme elements of President Trump's agenda.

That’s why I continue to support legal efforts to challenge executive overreach and work in Congress to safeguard vital programs. For example, I’m proud to co-sponsor the Taxpayer Data Protection Act, which ensures that only qualified and vetted public servants oversee the Treasury Department’s most sensitive systems. But we need bipartisan support to get this critical bill across the finish line.

Despite the uncertainty in Washington, my focus remains on making government work for you and defending the rights and freedoms we all hold dear.

Please continue reading for the latest updates from my office, and if you’d like real-time updates, I encourage you to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, X, Bluesky and Threads.

Be well,

Standing Up to the Trump Administration's NIH Cuts

As a doctor, I know how important it is to protect funding for medical research that saves lives. That’s why I’m fighting back against the Trump administration’s reckless attempts to slash funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—cuts that would hurt patients, researchers and our economy.

Here in California, the Trump administration is threatening over $800 million in NIH funding for our state. This funding supports groundbreaking research, life-saving clinical trials and jobs at our world-class institutions. That’s why I joined 39 of my California colleagues in demanding that the administration immediately reverse these harmful cuts. If we allow this funding to disappear, we risk losing our competitive edge in biomedical research to countries like China and Russia.

But this isn’t just about California—it’s about protecting medical research nationwide. The administration’s plan to block more than $4 billion in NIH funding would force labs to shut down, halt research on diseases like cancer and heart disease and put countless medical breakthroughs at risk. That’s why I joined over 150 House Democrats in urging the NIH to reverse course and restore research funding.

I will keep fighting to ensure that scientists and doctors have the resources they need to find cures, develop treatments and save lives.

Visiting Solidigm's Global HQ in Rancho Cordova

Image

I enjoyed visiting Solidigm’s Global Headquarters in Rancho Cordova and seeing how the CHIPS and Science Act is helping Sacramento County grow as a leader in semiconductor technology. Thank you to Kevin Nho, Dave Dixon and the Solidigm team for the tour and great conversation.

Solidigm chose to base its global headquarters in Sacramento County because of our skilled workers, great quality of life and strong support for innovation. Thanks to the CHIPS and Science Act, we are seeing more investment in high-tech manufacturing and good-paying jobs–– helping our local economies grow.

With federal support and strong partnerships between local universities and companies like Solidigm, Sacramento County is in a great position to lead the future of semiconductor technology. I look forward to continuing our work together to bring new opportunities and good jobs to our region.

Investing in Citrus Heights: Federal Funding for Transportation and Housing

Image

It was great catching up with City of Citrus Heights City Manager Ash Feeney!

Ash shared an update on the $2.65 million in federal funding I helped secure last year to modernize the city’s transportation infrastructure and expand access to affordable housing through the Sayonara Drive Housing Development Project.

I’m committed to doing everything I can to ensure Sacramento County communities continue to receive vital federal resources and grant funding.

I look forward to working with Ash to continue making Citrus Heights an even better place to live, work and raise a family!

Relaunching the California Public Higher Education Caucus

Image

I relaunched the bipartisan California Public Higher Education Caucus with my good friend and colleague Congressman Jay Obernolte.

I first launched this caucus in 2014 as a vehicle for a bipartisan group of lawmakers to advocate for the University of California, California State University and California Community Colleges and their students.

As a proud alumnus of the University of California system and a former educator, I am pleased  co-lead this group, 23 lawmakers strong and growing, once again in the 119th Congress to improve the quality, affordability and accessibility of California's public higher education system.

Tackling Mail Theft and USPS Issues in Sacramento County

I know that mail theft and vandalism have become serious concerns in Sacramento County, and I’m committed to helping address these issues. If you’re experiencing problems with missing mail, stolen packages or damaged mailboxes, here’s how you can take action:

Report Mail Theft & Vandalism: The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) tracks mail theft to identify problem areas and catch thieves. If your mail has been stolen or tampered with, report it at 877-876-2455 or www.uspis.gov.

Fixing Damaged Mailboxes (CBUs): If your Cluster Box Unit (CBU) is broken or vandalized, you must first submit a service request with USPS. Once you’ve done so, my office can follow up on your behalf.

How My Office Can Help: If you need assistance with a USPS issue, my team is here to help. To contact USPS on your behalf, we require a signed Privacy Act waiver, which you can find here.

While I can’t control USPS decisions, I promise to advocate for timely responses and push for solutions to ensure your mail is delivered securely and on time.
