He is convinced that the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors do not deserve a $58,000 pay raise. This Tuesday Feb. 25, he’ll do his best to stop the pay increase that he calls “obscene.” Caldwell joins me in the latest episode of Santa Barbara Talks. The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors want to increase their pay by $58,000 annually. The county’s Human Resources Department says the supervisors are underpaid compared to other counties of a similar population. The new proposal, to bump the wage up to $171,000 annually, would be tied to 70% of what California Superior Court Judges earn annually. Caldwell unapologetically says it is a “part-time job,” an allegation that has infuriating the members of the board. In this episode, Caldwell also discusses the controversial Santa Barbara County AMR contract, something he calls the worst moment he has scene in his more than three decades of following county government. We also talk about Roy Lee, Bob Nelson, Steve Lavagnino and why Das Williams lost his bid for re-election. Caldwell says he grew to like Williams, at a time when most of his longtime supporters had left him.
