Friends and Comrades-

Thank you to everyone who came out to our monthly General Meeting yesterday. Along with important updates on City Council and legislature(more on those below), we also elected our new Organizing Committee! Congratulations and thank you to our new chapter leadership:

?

Co-Chairs: Alma and Eric

Secretary: Greg

Treasurer: Todd

At-Large Organizers: Bradley, Sam, Spoons, and Dylan

?

We are excited to see how this new leadership team can help our organization grow in its capacity to support and fight for the working class in Santa Fe and northern New Mexico!

?Tell City Council: Keep Police Oversight Strong!

This Wednesday, the City Council will be having a final vote on whether to undo years of work by transferring oversight of the Police and Fire Departments over to the City Manager. This is the wrong choice for Santa Fe and will decrease accountability when police violence increased in our city by 75% between 2020 and 2023. We need to let City Council know this is an unacceptable change that will make the city less safe.?

?

If you can please attend this week's Council meeting and let our Councilors know that they should vote against bill 2024-18! Public comment will start at 7pm. You can attend the meeting in person at City Hall or online over Zoom at this link.

?Legislative Housing Updates

We are hearing that SB 216(Legalizing Rent Control) may be gaining momentum in the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee, but that public pressure will continue to be important in the coming days.?Please reach out to the members of the members of the Committee ?and urge them to vote 'Yes' on SB 216!

You can email Senators about SB 216 with this template.

?

HB 61(Unfair Practices Act Changes) would give the Attorney General far greater abilities to go after predatory landlords and is scheduled to be heard TODAY at 1:30 by the House Commerce and Economic Development Committee. Please contact you committee member and urge them to vote YES on HB 61!

?

HB 215(No Use of AI for Rent Manipulation) would prohibit landlords from using AI technology to collude on setting rental prices in NM. This is an important way to protect renters in NM from further exploitation in the housing market. This bill has made its way to the House floor and could be voted on this week. Please urge your Representatives to vote YES on HB 215!

?

Lastly, HB 339(Housing Discrimination and Human Rights Act) would ban source of Income discrimination in New Mexico. Santa Fe recently fought this battle against the landlords and their lobbyists and we believe all New Mexican deserve these same protections. The bill is also scheduled to be heard TODAY by the House Judiciary Committee. Please contact the committee members and ask them to vote YES on HB 339!

DSA depends on support from ordinary members, rather than corporate funding or grants. As we ramp up our campaigns to take on the millionaire and billionaire class in New Mexico, any donations you can provide will go a long way.
