A lot can change in 10 years.

Allow me to take you back for a moment to 2016: a tough year to be a Michigan Democrat. Republicans held the Governor’s mansion, Secretary of State and Attorney General seats, and a majority in the state legislature and on the state supreme court. And Michigan voted for President Trump.

But after a tough election year, Democrats got to work building the bench: finding a new generation of leadership to run for office locally, at the state level, and for federal office.

We elected a Democratic Governor in 2018, along with a Democratic Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State.

I was elected to the House for the first time that year – one of two Republican seats that flipped that year, and helped Democrats retake the House majority in DC.

In 2022, Democrats added to our bench when we won both the Michigan House and Senate, thanks to another raft of up-and-coming leaders.

And now, headed into a pivotal 2026, we’re reaping the benefits of that work building the bench. We have open seats up and down the ballot, but we have a large bench ready to compete for them.

It’s too early to know who the Democratic nominees will be for Senate, Governor, AG, Secretary of State, or some of our competitive races for the U.S. House and Michigan legislature.

But if the last 10 years has shown us anything, it’s that while Michigan is still a solid swing state, we can win when we have talented, pragmatic, midwestern Democrats who can run strong campaigns to win.

Against all odds, I’ll be the senior-most Michigan statewide official in 2 years. So my role will be to work hard to elect Michigan’s next generation of capable leaders. That’s why I’m asking today:
