Right now, a staggering 90 million young people are living with vision loss—and a vast majority of these cases are avoidable—like four-year-old Gunj’s from Mongolia.
Gunj’s vision got cloudier by the day. She had difficulty playing with her siblings and was even forced to stop attending preschool, which devastated her parents, who are both teachers. They knew they needed to get their daughter help fast.
They took Gunj to a doctor, who diagnosed her with cataracts in both eyes. She had to have them removed as soon as possible to avoid lifelong vision problems and potentially blindness.
Fortunately, Orbis's Flying Eye Hospital soon arrived in Mongolia, and Gunj—whose name means “sky princess”—was both nervous and excited as she climbed aboard a plane that had traveled through the sky to reach her.
There, Orbis volunteer Dr. Divya Natarajan performed sight-saving cataract surgery for Gunj at no cost to her family.
