Dear Neighbor,

This past week in Washington, D.C., has been intense.

My offices in California and D.C. have been flooded with calls from concerned constituents who are alarmed by the Trump-Vance Administration’s unconstitutional actions and its decision to grant the world’s richest man access to their personal data and taxpayer funds.

So, what am I doing to stop Elon Musk and his allies from accessing our sensitive personal data?

On Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson had a meeting with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who granted Elon Musk control over our federal payment system, in the Capitol building. As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee—which oversees taxation, Social Security, Medicare, and more, I knew I had to try to join this meeting to share my concerns. With my colleague Rep. Gwen Moore (WI-04), we went to the Speaker’s office to join this meeting. While Secretary Bessent avoided us, we were able to meet cordially with Speaker Johnson.

Our Takeaways:

  • Speaker Johnson deliberately shielded Bessent from us.
  • He couldn’t explain why Elon Musk was granted unrestricted access to our personal data or allowed to seize control of taxpayer dollars.
  • Even he couldn't justify the legality of this move
  • He vaguely promised hearings "next week," but by then, the damage may already be done.

This was not acceptable!

After speaking with Speaker Johnson, who was unsure about the legality of Elon Musk's use of sensitive taxpayer data, the Congresswomen sent an official letter welcoming his commitment to a hearing next week. We have yet to hear back from him.

Letters and speaking to the press is great, but legislation is also needed. That's why I joined House Democrats in fighting back by introducing the Taxpayer Data Protection Act to protect Americans’ sensitive information and essential benefits like Social Security and Medicare.

If just three House Republicans side with the American people instead of Elon Musk, we can pass this critical bill.

In other positive news, 13 states, including California, are suing DOGE and Elon Musk over their access to government payment systems containing personal data. And on Thursday, a federal judge temporarily limited most of DOGE’s access to the Treasury Department’s payments system after a group of unions sued the agency for illegally sharing their members’ information with Musk and his consultants.

Making it CLEAR: Americans will not stand for Elon Musk’s unfettered access to highly sensitive personal information

P.S.!  My team and I have made a BlueSky account, follow me for updates there.
