What’s New Mexico known for?

The answer isn’t as simple as the question sounds. But we have quite a lot
to be proud of. Here are 10 fun facts about New Mexico that you’d never
guess!

1. Santa Fe, at 7,199 feet above sea level, is the nation’s highest state
capital — even beating out Denver! ⛰️

2. New Mexico is home to three World Heritage Sites: Carlsbad Caverns,
Chaco Canyon National Historical Site, and Taos Pueblo. 🌎

3. White Sands National Monument — which attracts thousands of tourists
every year isn’t made of sand but instead of white gypsum crystals. ⏳

4. New Mexico has more Ph.D.s per capita than any other state. 🤓

5. Move over Napa Valley, New Mexico’s wine industry can be traced back to
the early 1600s, making it the oldest known wine producer in North
America. 🍷

6. The Wilderness Act was born here. When signed in 1964 by then President
Lyndon B. Johnson, few were aware that this landmark legislation
originated in New Mexico in part because of the tireless efforts of
ecologist and Forest Service ranger Aldo Leopold. 🌳

7. Almost every state has an official bird, flag, flower, and motto. But
not every state has an official cookie. Only New Mexico and Massachusetts
do. New Mexico’s state cookie is the biscochito. 🍪

8. 1 out of 4 workers in New Mexico are able to feed their families and
retire with dignity because they work directly for the federal government.

9. New Mexico was among some of the last states to join the Union with a
statehood day on January 6, 1912. 🇺🇲

10. Around 1,000 reports of UFOs are made each year in New Mexico. 🛸
