Our country is in crisis. An unelected billionaire is taking control of federal agencies, there was an illegal and unconstitutional freeze of federal funds appropriated by Congress, and Donald Trump is starting trade wars and saying he will "take over Gaza." Americans are anxious, enraged, and fearful about what's next.

And now the Trump Administration is trying to defund and privatize public education. I'm a long-time supporter of public education, so this is infuriating. I went to public schools, and so did my husband and kids. For years, I was a parent volunteer helping in classrooms and advocating for school funding. I know that public education is the best investment we can make because it has the power to create opportunities and change lives.

We don't know what it will look like yet, but we are expecting Donald Trump to sign an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education – a step right out of the Project 2025 playbook.

As a senior member of the Education and Workforce committee, I will do everything I can to stop this. Donald Trump does not have the power to dismantle the Department of Education; it was created by Congress, and only Congress has that power. And we are not going to comply. We'll hold Republicans accountable and slow down or block this harmful proposal whenever and however possible. And with only a slim majority, the Republicans can't afford to lose more than a few votes.

Make no mistake: cuts to public education will be devastating to educators, students, and communities around Oregon and across the country. And I'll be working together with our state government to see where we can fill in the gaps and continue to support our schools during this difficult time.
