Issue Number:  Tax Tip 2025-12

Direct File provides free federal return filing for eligible taxpayers in 25 states

Taxpayers can file their taxes quickly, easily and for free directly with the IRS using IRS Direct File. The web-based service, available in English and Spanish, offers guided help for preparing and filing a federal tax return from a smartphone, tablet or computer in 25 states.

Direct File is easy to use and helps eligible taxpayers:

  • File a 2024 federal tax return for free directly with the IRS.
  • Save time by opting in to having information imported from their IRS account, including personal information and W-2 if available.
  • Claim certain credits and deductions.
  • Add tax information with step-by-step guidance.
  • Chat with IRS Direct File customer support in English or Spanish.
  • Prepare returns from smartphones, laptops, tablets and desktop computers.

Eligibility

IRS Direct File service is available for taxpayers who file simple federal tax returns in 25 participating states and report the following types of income:

  • W-2 wage income.
  • SSA-1099 Social Security income.
  • 1099-G unemployment compensation.
  • 1099-INT interest income.
  • 1099-R retirement income.
  • 1099-MISC for Alaska residents reporting the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend.

This is not for taxpayers with other types of income, such as gig economy, rental or business income. Go to directfile.irs.gov to check your eligibility and see if Direct File is a good fit. If you’re not eligible, we’ll connect you to alternative filing options.

Direct File doesn't prepare state returns. Once taxpayers have completed their federal tax return, Direct File automatically guides them to state services to complete their state taxes. Visit the state websites to find information about income tax filing in each state.

Get the latest news by subscribing to the Direct File newsletter.
