Legislative Update

Friends and Neighbors,

I hope this message finds you well. With the news breaking late Wednesday night, our fourth week at the Capitol is set to close on a high note.

For those of you who haven’t heard, a deal was struck between Republican and Democrat leadership that will allow for House business to move forward again. This includes official committee hearings, floor sessions, and the passing of legislation.

This is a great win for Republicans and the State of Minnesota. For the first time in six years, there will be a Republican Speaker of the House. The deal also gives House Republicans committee chairs and a voting majority on all committees for the next five weeks leading up to the March 11th special election in Roseville. Regardless of the special election’s outcome, Speaker Demuth will retain her position for the entire biennium.

*Focus on Serving Our Communities*

This week has been as busy as ever, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn more about how I can best serve our communities and the State of Minnesota.

*Agricultural Day at the Capitol*

Tuesday was Agricultural Day at the Capitol, and I had the chance to sit down with my constituent Andy Walker from the Farmers Union. We discussed several critical issues affecting farmers and rural Minnesotans, including the impacts of the Proprietary Repair Laws and the challenges facing meat processing plants. We explored the obstacles to production, staffing issues, and how we can work to ensure rural communities have the resources they need.

*Agricultural Finance & Policy Committee*

The Agricultural Committee has been focused on evaluating the current budget, aiming to determine what can be maintained and how best to stretch the funds to maximize their effectiveness. Meetings with budget auditors have begun to ensure transparency and alignment with the committee's goals. Our ongoing discussions are helping us better understand the budget’s allocations, identifying both strengths and areas where funding is lacking. To further inform these efforts, we met with Tom Peterson, the Commissioner of Agriculture, to gain his perspective on the agricultural budget and its priorities.

*Meeting with Minnesota Trappers Association*

I also met with Randy Goldeman of the Minnesota Trappers Association to discuss their upcoming return to the Capitol on March 5th. They’ll be meeting with legislators to talk about issues impacting Minnesota trappers and share their hopes for this legislative session.
