Last week, I went to California to meet with representatives, first responders, and displaced families after the horrific LA area fires. The level of destruction was astonishing.
Houses reduced to ash, memories gone forever — it’s devastating. But despite the horror stories and the grief, I was just as astonished by the hope and solidarity the recovery inspired.

Locally, the LA community has really come together. However, while the fires were still raging and people were risking life and limb, AI-generated content online showed a story that was not fully representative of what was actually happening on the ground. Not only was this information misleading, but it also made things on the ground more challenging to decipher.
This AI-generated content enabled a dark political agenda with little concern or care about how it was impacting those relying on information online to protect their family, communities, and homes.
I’ve been sounding the alarm about the potential for AI content and Deepfakes to be weaponized and cause harm in times of crisis – and that’s exactly what happened as viral AI videos and bots flooded our platforms with conspiracies and disinformation, just when the people needed the truth most.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that AI-fueled disinformation online may have cost lives as the fires raged — both in real-time and in the future.
Last year I introduced legislation to address the growing risks of AI and Deepfakes, as technology is advancing faster than the laws in place to protect us. Now, as the Trump administration has made their alliance with tech billionaires clear, my colleagues and I are taking this moment to reintroduce the bills that will protect you and your family online and stop mass confusion and exploitation going forward. * TAKE IT DOWN Act * I reintroduced the TAKE IT DOWN Act last month. This legislation makes it unlawful for a person to knowingly publish or threaten to publish nonconsensual intimate imagery on social media and other platforms. You can read more about that here. * SHIELD Act * The SHIELD Act makes it illegal to knowingly distribute a private intimate visual depiction of an individual that is obtained or created under circumstances of known privacy, and where the distribution causes or is intended to cause harm to the individual depicted. * NO AI FRAUD Act * The NO AI FRAUD Act creates an intellectual property right that every individual holds over their own likeness and voice. Allows individuals to seek monetary damages for harmful, unauthorized uses of their likeness or voice. And guards against sexually exploitative deepfakes and child sexual abuse material. I won’t back down from this fight — especially after seeing the damage and confusion that AI-generated content caused in these LA wildfires. Tech companies need to be held accountable for the impact they have on our safety and security. Protecting your family, privacy, intellectual property, and personal security during these advancements in artificial technology is a priority.
I was heartened and humbled by what I witnessed from the first responders, volunteers, and local community members impacted by the Palisades fires. And I left deeply inspired in my work to fight for them and families across the country who rely on lawmakers like me to keep them safe from harm.
