We’ve always known that Trump is a grave threat to democracy. Now that he’s in office again, congressional Republicans are wasting no time trying to undermine the voting rights of millions of Americans by pushing through the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
The bill would require voters nationwide to provide a passport or birth certificate in person to register to vote or to update their registration. Here’s the problem with that:
- More than 21 million American citizens don’t have those documents available
- 69 million American women don’t have a birth certificate with their married name
- In some of the poorest states, over 70% of residents don’t have a passport
This is a thinly veiled attack on millions of eligible voters—and we won’t stand for it.

Make no mistake: the daily chaos spilling out of the White House is a strategy. Trump knows that every wild quote and sweeping executive order means more headlines and more confusion.
And now he’s trying to trick lawmakers into making it harder for millions of eligible Americans to cast their votes. Republicans will say that the SAVE Act is about preventing non-citizens from registering, but that is already illegal. It’s actually a ploy to suppress the votes of millions of Americans.
When Kansas enacted a similar law, 31,000 eligible American citizens were blocked from registering to vote.
