Something to Celebrate:

Happy Black History Month! To celebrate, we're highlighting a few of the incredible Black Women leading California's fight for climate justice and democracy. This week, we're putting the spotlight on Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (California, District 37).

Born in Chicago, Kamlager-Dove got her first taste of politics working with her grandmother to help elect Harold Washington – the city’s first Black mayor. In 2018, she was elected to the California Legislature, and in 2021, she won a special election to join the California Senate. As a representative, Kamlager-Dove introduced legislation to center racial justice and equity in California’s climate and environmental policies and advocated for passing a Green New Deal.

Her work today as a U.S. Congresswoman continues to showcase her deep commitment to advancing California and the nation toward a clean-energy future.

Something You Can Do:

The Los Angeles wildfires are finally 100% contained and communities are breathing a sigh of relief. But skyrocketing insurance rates are hitting Californians hard.

State Farm, the largest home insurer in California, asked for an emergency rate hike of 22% to cover their losses from the fires. This disaster is expected to cost the insurance industry $20 to $45 billion in total—and they want Californians to pay the price.

But we're sponsoring a bill that will solve that problem: SB 222, the Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act. This legislation will let victims of unnatural disasters recover damages from the polluters responsible for causing the climate crisis, keeping insurance affordable and accessible for Californians.

We're already lobbying hard to get support from the California Senate—but there's nothing more powerful than the voice of a constituent to pressure representatives into action.
