Hi, Republicans are pushing a new voter suppression bill that could effectively disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans. The cynically titled SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act would require a birth certificate or a passport to register to vote — no other IDs would be acceptable. That means drivers licenses, military IDs, and student IDs would no longer be accepted.1 With roughly 150 million Americans without a passport and many more without proper access to their birth certificate, this could be one of the most destructive voter suppression bills in modern history. Our lawmakers must oppose the SAVE Act at all costs. Sign the petition: Reject voter suppression! Oppose the SAVE Act. Approximately 69 million American women do not have a birth certificate with their current legal name on it, creating significant barriers for them to vote under the SAVE Act. 150 million Americans do not have a passport, and elderly Americans are the least likely to hold one. In 7 states, less than one-third of citizens have a valid passport – Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. The SAVE Act would erode the fundamental right to vote, silencing the voices of vulnerable communities under the dishonest guise of election security. Congress needs to reject this harmful legislation, and instead protect and expand voting rights by supporting measures such as the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
