Liberal Democrats Our plans to make communities safer

John, nearly 6,000 crimes
<[link removed]>
went unsolved every day in the year ending September 2024 - that’s over 2.1
million across England and Wales, or 40% of all recorded crimes.

Thousands of victims are being left without the justice they deserve and
public confidence in policing is plummeting.

Our latest polling shows that half of people aren’t confident the police
would turn up for a burglary or car theft. 8% have even delayed calling the
police, worried they’d take too long to arrive or wouldn’t take their crime
seriously.

We need a return to proper community policing
<[link removed]>, where
officers are visible, trusted and focused on solving the crimes that impact
local communities the most.

Years of ineffective resourcing from the Conservatives left forces
overstretched and underresourced, and the government’s latest£100 million pledge

<[link removed]>
for community policing is just a drop in the ocean. We’re pushing Labour to be
much bolder.

But it’s not just our streets at risk. Crime is rising online, too.

Last year, online shopping fraud cost consumers £56 million—a 20% increase,
with 68,000 cases from 2023-24. Just as policing hasn’t kept up in our
communities, it’s also failing in the digital world.

That’s why we’re urging the government to set up a new Online Crime Agency to
tackle fraud, bring online criminals to justice, and free up police time to
focus on keeping our communities safe.

Keeping people safe is a basic duty of government, John.

The government must urgently deliver the change they promised by listening to
our proposals to restore the public's trust in policing.

Best wishes,
