A new study reveals that a quarter of freshwater animals are facing the threat of extinction, with agriculture impacting 74% of the threatened species. In good news, endangered tule elk on the Point Reyes National Seashore will once again be able to roam free and graze as they need to, after a settlement between environmental groups and the National Park Service following years of meat industry pressure to restrict the elk's population in favor of cattle ranchers (see a 2020 Farm Sanctuary op-ed on this important issue!). Washington state has banned net-pen fish farming , after more than 80% of public comments supported the ban. Plus, the New York Times devoted a column to letters from readers expressing their concerns over an op-ed praising factory farming. And research shows that pledges to eat plant-based for Veganuary can lead to lasting dietary change.
