The Trump administration is seeking to expand the use of the federal death penalty, reversing progress made to limit its application. This cruel and unnecessary policy undermines justice, disproportionately targets marginalized communities, and risks the irreversible tragedy of executing innocent people.

The death penalty has consistently been shown to fail as a deterrent to crime. Instead, it perpetuates systemic inequities, with Black and Latino individuals far more likely to face capital punishment than white defendants. It also increases the likelihood of irreversible mistakes—over 190 people sentenced to death in the U.S. have been exonerated since 1973, and countless others may not have been as fortunate. The death penalty is a cruel and unjust policy.
