Portsmouth's bus revolution: a success story of growth and innovation
Hello Supporter
Examples of best practice are worth sharing, so I am excited to send a recent guest article for our blog by Portsmouth's Cabinet Member for Transport, in which he explains how Portsmouth City Council has revitalised the city's buses.
Councillor Peter Candlish says: "I am proud to share the incredible progress Portsmouth’s bus network has made the past year. We’ve just hit a major milestone, with over 1 million bus journeys being taken each month – an impressive 22.3 per cent increase in bus usage compared to last year."
Portsmouth received funding from the Department for Transport, and launched a Bus Service Improvement Plan in January 2022. They are now the highest improver in the UK for bus travel, and among the top four cities in England for bus travel recovery.
The transformation in Portsmouth is an excellent demonstrator of what sufficient funding can achieve. We are campaigning for targeted investment in areas where buses are currently underfunded.
Read Councillor Candlish's blog to find out more about how Portsmouth are achieving their progress.
