Elon Musk is attempting to illegally take over USAID, and I’m taking action.
I’m proud to be a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and to serve as the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Africa. And before I was in Congress, I worked on international conflict resolution – so I know exactly how critical USAID’s work is to communities around the world and our own safety here at home.
It’s also obvious that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have no idea how foreign aid works.
Contrary to their bizarre and completely incorrect claims that USAID is a “front for terrorism,” USAID’s work creating economic opportunities and providing disaster relief and health care and emergency food assistance in countries around the world is one of the most effective things that we could be doing to prevent violent extremism and terrorism from taking root.
So let’s be clear: Shuttering USAID will hurt people all over the world, and it will hurt our national security.
But not to be lost in the shuffle, shuttering USAID is illegal.
I’ll say it again: What Elon Musk is doing is illegal.
Only an act of Congress can eliminate USAID – because Congress passed a law guaranteeing USAID’s independence.
This week, I’ll be introducing legislation to push back on Elon Musk’s illegal takeover of USAID.
And when I do, I will need every single one of you on the phones to the Republicans who have claimed to care about these issues. We need to hold them accountable and put them on the record.
For right now, I just need to know you’re on board. Add your name now if you agree that we must stop this takeover.
USAID may be the first power grab, but we know it won’t be the last.
So we are not going to sit back and take this. We are not going to allow Elon Musk to sentence millions of kids to poverty or death – and we are NOT going to let an un-elected billionaire take over and destroy our country.
More to come soon,
Sara
