The legal battle over North Carolina’s 2024 State Supreme Court election continues to escalate. This Friday, February 7, another hearing is scheduled as Republican state Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin continues to refuse to concede, challenging over 65,000 ballots.
Justice Allison Riggs defeated Griffin by 734 votes in November's election, but instead of listening to the people, he is trying to litigate away his loss by silencing voters — disproportionately Black North Carolinians — and overturn the results of the election. Justice Riggs’ victory is the last uncertified race in this country.
Although this is a North Carolina case, Republicans’ efforts to overturn a legitimate election could be a sign of what’s to come in states across the country. This is exactly why we must pay attention to this ongoing battle.
The North Carolina Democrats continue to fight tooth and nail to uphold the will of the people, and supporters like you are helping draw public attention to this crisis. If Republicans succeed in stealing this election, they will export their blueprint to overturn our votes everywhere. We need all supporters of free and fair elections to show their support for this fight — split a donation today between the North Carolina Democrats and Fair Fight to protect our elections. Among the voters challenged by Griffin are Justice Allison Riggs’ parents, who have been voting for 50 years. Capt. Rebecca Lobach, the Army pilot who was killed along with about 70 other people after a passenger plane collided with her helicopter in Washington D.C. last week, is also one of the North Carolina voters whose ballot is being challenged.
An analysis shows that Black voters were twice as likely to have their ballots challenged as white voters, even though white voters outnumber Black voters by over 3 to 1. Additionally, voters aged 18-25, who comprise about 12% of the electorate, made up 23% of the ballots challenged.
The judges and justices presiding over these cases know that we are watching — we can’t let our guard down now, when our democracy is at stake.
Help keep up the drumbeat and pitch in now to split a donation between the North Carolina Democratic Party and Fair Fight — let’s continue putting power behind our legal and communications strategies, and the fight for free and fair elections. [[link removed]]
