Hi Friend,
We've seen it all over the news: Eric Adams is making it harder for everyday New Yorkers to get by, deferring to Trump and siding with his corporate cronies. There are rumors he might switch parties to have a shot at re-election and he's leaned more and more into right-wing propaganda which throws immigrants, LGBTQ and working class people under the bus.
Unfortunately, this is nothing new. Mayor Adams has always been in the pocket of right-wing billionaires, Real Estate lobbyists and the 1%. He did their bidding by watering down our city's leading jobs and climate law, Local Law 97. But now, the City Council is about to introduce a bill to close the Eric Adams loophole in the Green New Deal city law.
Join us Thursday, February 13 at 9 PM on the steps outside City Hall to urge the City Council to step up to our MAGA mayor and close the Eric Adams REC loophole in Local Law 97!
The REC (or Renewable Energy Credit) Loophole currently allows Big Landlords to skirt on cutting pollution from their buildings. These polluters can buy REC's instead making their buildings clean and green--meaning less jobs in making our homes climate-friendly and higher utility bills for us all.
This is unacceptable and simply tone-deaf in light of our climate and cost-of-living crises. Come to the press event with Council members Carmen De La Rosa and Lincoln Restler who are sponsoring the bill that closes the dangerous REC loophole!
Despite Mayor Adams fighting against Local Law 97, our city has done a very good job at enforcing it to date. Over 92% of buildings are currently in compliance with Local Law 97. If we close this loophole and fight off any other MAGA-type attacks from the Real Estate industry or right-wing politicians over the coming years, we will cut pollution, lower our bills and create thousands of new jobs in fixing our buildings and making sure we truly move off fossil fuels here in New York.
It takes people power to beat people like Mayor Adams and makes sure NYC bucks MAGA policies and practices instead of submitting to them. So come out on Thursday at 9 AM on the City Hall steps. We have no time to lose!
See you there,
Santosh, Pete, Jose, Olivia and Ayesha from New York Communities for Change
