Hi John—Happy Black History Month!

This annual observance gives us an opportunity to recognize the profound impact Black Americans have made across every field - from science and medicine to arts and culture, from civil rights advocacy to entrepreneurship and innovation.

As we celebrate throughout February, we honor the well-known pioneers of color who broke barriers and the countless unsung heroes whose determination and resilience helped shape our nation. Their stories remind us that Black history is American history.

However, we must also acknowledge that significant work remains to be done. Black communities across the country continue to face systemic challenges, including disparities in healthcare access, educational opportunities, and economic advancement. The ongoing impacts of historical disenfranchisement and mass incarceration continue to affect Black families and communities today. These persistent inequities remind us that while we celebrate progress, we must also remain committed to creating meaningful change.

This Black History Month, let us not only celebrate achievements but also renew our dedication to building a more just and equitable society.

I encourage everyone to take time this month to learn, reflect, and engage with Black history and culture. Please take the time to explore local Black History Month events, support Black-owned businesses, or dive into works by Black authors and artists – not just this month, but everyday as we work toward lasting change.

Be well,

Dr. Ami Bera
