Dear Advocates,
I am thrilled to share the good news that the Montana State Senate just voted to approve SB 136 at the second reading. SB 136 would close the dangerous loophole that has allowed assisted suicide to be practiced there since 2009. Unlike other states where assisted suicide has been legalized, it remains unlawful in Montana but practiced with impunity due to a State Supreme Court case that allows consent to be used as a defense.
SB 136 will protect vulnerable Montanans and restore trust in physicians. I have had the privilege of working with incredible advocates on the ground in Montana who have, for years, been educating and working towards passage of this legislation. My PRAF colleague, Sarah Davenport-Smith, was present last week for a committee hearing and met in person the tireless advocates who continue to show up and speak out. This was only the first step. Next, the bill will move to a third reading, which could come as early as tomorrow. If it passes, SB 136 will move to the House. We're not to the finish line yet, but with your help we can get there.
If you live in Montana, please take a moment to reach out to your legislator! YOUR voice is vital in helping to educate and encourage a vote of YES on SB 136. If you don't live in Montana but still want to help, please reach out. We have a place for you no matter where you live. With gratitude, Jessica
