Late last night, I held the Senate floor for an hour, John, as part of a 30 hour effort (the maximum under Senate rules) to slow down the nomination of Russell Vought.
We need to take every action we can to try and stop the nominations of these terrible candidates and make the case against them with the American people. That’s why it was so important to protest Russell Vought’s nomination for director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) — the government office that helps the President manage the federal budget and the Executive Branch — yes, that one.
Just last week, OMB was responsible for freezing all federal funding and loans. Something that Russ Vought defended and helped dream up under Project 2025.
And while daytime has now come, the chaos Donald Trump and Elon Musk have unleashed is still unfolding.
A mother in the Central Valley is waking up, still unsure how she’ll get medical care for her child now that a federal grant for her community’s only health center is in limbo.
A federal career employee is facing another day of uncertainty, wondering how they’ll make rent if they’re laid off.
Around the world, people are grappling with the reality that U.S. humanitarian aid — often their very last lifeline — has disappeared.
If my constituents are awake at night, fearing Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s next actions, then I damn sure will be taking every action to fight back – no matter what time it is.
Donald Trump is trying to obliterate all checks and balances, and Republicans seem content to let him do it. He’s filling his Cabinet with enablers who will let him subvert the rule of law, including Russ Vought, who wrote the Project 2025 agenda Trump is now enacting.
They are engineering chaos. Not as a byproduct, but as a deliberate strategy.
By overwhelming us with a storm of unconstitutional executive orders, illegal data seizures, and purges of government officials, they hope to paralyze us into inaction and dismantle the checks and balances that protect democracy.
The goal? Consolidate power in the hands of Donald Trump and his billionaire allies so they can plunder the resources of this country for themselves. And they will succeed — unless we do everything possible to stop them.
Speaker Mike Johnson will help Trump seize control of government spending — congressional authority be damned — if it will help advance the right-wing agenda of dismantling the government.
With the current composition of the Supreme Court and Justices like Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito beholden to the same mega-donors set to profit from Trump’s tax cuts — checks and balances be damned — they will look the other way.
Our institutions are under siege. But we have a choice: Let Trump and his enablers raid the Treasury for their own enrichment — or fight back.
That’s my fight in the Senate. That’s why I held the Senate Floor late last night.
I will not let Donald Trump raid the till of the American people without exposing, at every turn, who is robbing the bank. I will not let Trump fill federal agencies with unqualified, dangerous extremists without making clear the threats they pose and doing everything to stop them.
If we do nothing, if we let Trump install Russ Vought to dismantle government from the inside, then we are complicit in the destruction that follows.
