Happy Thursday, Fellow Democrats!

We are now 159 days away from electing a new President of the United States!

UNITY TASKFORCE

Speaking of a new President….Presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden, alongside Senator Bernie Sanders, has created a “Unity Taskforce” to unify the party ahead of the November election.  You can read more about the taskforce here:  https://www.npr.org/2020/05/13/855203151/biden-and-sanders-announce-task-forces-to-find-party-unity-over-policy

The areas of unity and members of the taskforce are:

AMENDMENT 4

On Sunday, Federal Judge Robert Hinkle ruled the ex-felons that fall under Amendment 4 will be able to vote without payment of fines and fees.  Governor DeSantis quickly indicated he would appeal this decision.  You can read more about the decision and implications for Florida here:

DEMOCRATIC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ELECTIONSWe are still looking for Precinct Captains and Leadership Positions

The Democrats of Indian River Executive Committee (DEC) believes in the Democratic ideals of social, racial, economic, and environmental justice.  As the county arm of the Florida Democratic Party, we oversee all Democratic Party activities in Indian River County.

The DEC is an elected body comprised of members, called Precinct Captains, who act as neighborhood organizers to register voters, increase voter turnout and engage fellow Democrats in their precincts.

If you would like to become a Precinct Captain, you must qualify by filing a Candidate Oath with the Supervisor of Elections between June 8-12, 2020. Elections will be held at the December 17, 2020 Organizational DEC Meeting at which precinct captains and officers will be elected.

For more information please contact our DEC Chair, Adriana de Kanter, at [email protected]

You can access the Candidate Oath at https://dos.myflorida.com/media/702990/dsde305cm-committeemen-and-committeewomen-oath-apr-2020-_final.pdf

WHAT ARE WE WORKING ON?

As in every week, the Precinct Action Committee (PAC) met via Zoom again to discuss our phone banking progress, future phone banks, texting programs and incentives for our volunteers.

So far, our amazing volunteers have made approximately 3,000 calls!  Thank you volunteers, we couldn’t do this monumental task without you!

This week, we reached out to the Supervisor of Elections to determine where we are as far as Democrats in Indian River who are signed up for Vote By Mail (VBM).  Here is what we learned:

  • 10,118 Democrats are signed up for VBM for the Primary Election in August.
  • 10,027 Democrats are signed up for VBM for the General Election in November.
  • Overall, there are 28,112 voters in Indian River County signed up for VBM for the Primary Election.
  • Overall, there are 28,007 voters in Indian River County signed up for VBM for the General Election.

We have approximately 5,000 more Democrats in Indian River County signed up for VBM than in 2016.  We are making progress!

If you are interested in making phone calls or texting, contact the office at [email protected]

SPEAKING OF DATA….

Our Data Team is in need of help!  We need some dedicated data gurus to help with the work we will be doing over the summer months.  If you are interested, please contact Jim St. Martin at [email protected]

IF YOU HAVEN’T - SIGN UP TO VOTE BY MAIL!!!

If you haven’t signed up to Vote By Mail, go to the Florida Democratic Party website https://fl.dems.vote/mail/ and sign up!   The FDP website is keeping track of VBM requests through their online tool and gives us a clearer picture of how many Democrats in Indian River County are signing up.

VOTER SUPPRESSION VIDEO

We’ve all heard of the voter suppression in Georgia during the Kemp/Abrams 2018 election.  This 38 minute video highlights what really happened in Georgia and the continued fight for the right to vote.  It’s worth watching!

DEMOCRATIC CLUB VIRTUAL MEETING

In order to continue its monthly meetings, the Democratic Club has planned its first virtual Zoom meeting for Wednesday, June 10th at 6 p.m. Zoom is very easy to use and will be a good vehicle to keep us energized and connected.

The Club will follow an agenda similar to those used at in-person meetings. Members will be able to socialize and a short business meeting will follow. In light of our new normal, a special segment will feature Club members relating their stories of how the pandemic and closed economy have and still are affecting them and their loved ones.

Happy, sad, humdrum, exciting, your experiences and perspectives are important. Anyone wishing to share their Covid-19 era stories can contact Claudia Martino via email ([email protected]) or phone (954-290-5661).

Lastly, let’s take a minute to remember George Floyd, the man killed by police in Minneapolis.  As Nancy Pelosi said “We did see a murder on TV and it wasn’t self defense.”
