Washington, D.C. – February 6, 2025 – Today, the Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie introduced the Official Sports Capital of the United States Designation Act of 2025, this legislation recognizes the District’s status as the premier destination for sports events, teams, and activities in the nation. The bill also directs the Washington Convention and Sports Authority (Events DC) to develop and implement a strategic plan to elevate D.C.’s presence in the sports industry and enhance community engagement.
“As the home to world-class sports teams, historic venues, and internationally recognized sporting events, the District of Columbia has long been a leader in the sports landscape,” said Councilmember's Kenyan R. McDuffie. “This designation solidifies our status and unlocks new opportunities to expand our economic and cultural impact through sports.”
Under the legislation, Events DC will be tasked with implementing a comprehensive plan that includes:
* Attracting and retaining major sporting events, conferences, and tournaments to drive tourism and economic development.
* Increasing investment in youth sports and community athletic programs to foster inclusivity and future generations of athletes.
* Developing partnerships with professional, collegiate, and amateur teams to engage residents and visitors.
* Launching marketing and branding initiatives to highlight D.C. as the nation’s top sports hub.
The Official Sports Capital of the United States Designation Act of 2025 underscores the District’s ongoing investments in premier sports venues, including Capital One Arena, Nationals Park, Audi Field, the RFK Memorial Stadium Campus, and CareFirst Arena. These investments, combined with D.C.’s central location and diverse fan base, make it the ideal city to be recognized as the nation’s foremost sports capital.
The bill will now proceed through the legislative process, with Councilmembers and stakeholders working to advance its passage.
