Dear Subscriber,
I’m Laurie Goering, and I lead our far-flung team of climate change reporters here at TRF, with my colleague Megan Rowling.
For more than a decade we’ve dug out great stories about the human impact of climate change around the world and gathered them into a weekly newsletter for you. Now we’re changing that newsletter – and I wanted to tell you why.
Over the past few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s become more apparent than ever how closely climate change is tied up with all of our other problems - and opportunities.
Better rainwater harvesting to cope with drought is now providing hand-washing water during the pandemic, for instance. Stretched-thin emergency services around the world are worrying about how to deal with cyclone and hurricane season alongside the virus threat. How do you social distance in an evacuation shelter?
Meanwhile, trillions of dollars – the money policymakers told us they didn’t have to deal with climate change – are now being spent to stop our economies flatlining. If that cash can be spent on the right things [[link removed]] – from better broadband to renewable power, cycle lanes to social safety nets – it could help build the fairer, greener societies that we’ll need to combat the next big threat: climate change.
Frontlines, our new newsletter starting next week, aims to give you more insight into how the day’s big issues fit together, and how climate change is at the heart of many of them.
Look for more behind-the-scenes tales of how we gather our news, the occasional takeover by a guest editor, smart thinking from smart people. We want this to be a conversation – not a one-way street. Get in touch and tell us what you think.
What won’t change is what’s at the centre of our work: Well-told, important stories with people at their heart, reported from the climate frontlines and shared in simple language everyone can understand.
See you in the inbox!
Take care,
Laurie
