Hey Friend,

First things first, Happy Black History Month!

It’s more important than ever to take time to learn about and honor the Black leaders who contribute so much to our country then and now. Stay tuned for our series spotlighting progressive Black changemakers across the country!

Until then, Friend – here’s what you need to know:

“Amid Trump’s Anti-Diversity Effort, Black History Month Takes On New Meaning” -The New York Times

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Donald Trump’s executive order to end “all discriminatory programs” attacks programs meant to boost diversity, equity, and inclusion in and out of the government. This move means government officials have 60 days to terminate programs, offices, grants, and contracts that fall under this order and many government employees overseeing DEI programs will likely lose their jobs. As Trump’s ban takes effect, the Department of Defense is taking it one step further to no longer “use official resources” to celebrate Black History Month, Pride Month, Women’s History Month, and other celebrations they have called “Identity Months”.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN: Since 1976, Black History Month has served as a time for celebration, education, remembrance, and inclusion. Now, there is a somber meaning as studying the full, true history will now be seen as an act of resistance. Trump thinks that DEI programs are meant to divide, but it’s his decision to end these programs that is the true division. The more he attempts to rewrite history, the more he is able to concentrate his power.

WHAT CAN YOU DO: Trump’s mission to divide Americans is disheartening, but we will not stand back silently. This month is a chance to learn and celebrate the Black community, and Future Coalition is proud to support organizations like Black Girl Environmentalist, who are fighting for equitable and progressive change. With opportunities for fellowships, mentorship programs, program sponsorship, and more, the fight for a greener and more inclusive future is fostered here - to support their work, click here. “David Hogg Becomes Democratic National Committee's First Gen Z Vice Chair” -Huffington Post

WHAT’S HAPPENING: On February 1st, the DNC Membership elected David Hogg as one of the Vice Chairs winning 214 of the 412 votes total. Hogg, a youth activist and survivor of the Parkland school shooting in 2018, has repeatedly said that the Democratic party needs to be revamped. He is determined to redirect the party’s messaging to bring young people back! In 2024, youth turnout was at an all-time low because the issues that mattered most were not centered on both presidential campaigns. In a position of leadership, Hogg is determined to “win our young people back.”

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN: Hogg’s election as DNC Vice Chair shows that the party is shifting towards the future we’ve been fighting for. He sees the bigger picture, and as a leader who will help shape our plans for 2026 and 2028, we couldn’t be more thrilled about the new direction the party will (hopefully) be heading in.

WHAT CAN YOU DO: At a time when our future is under attack, having a youth activist at the head of the table shows that we refuse to be ignored! For more updates about Gen Z activists making history, and ways to get involved in organizing opportunities, follow us on Instagram.

Donald Trump has been president for over two weeks now. We know the constant updates of how he is dismantling our future are concerning, to put it mildly. Donald Trump is hoping we tune out, and let him continue unimpeded down his destructive path, but Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is telling us why we can’t shy away from calling him out:

When public outcry forced the administration to rescind their executive order freezing federal funding and grants last week, it proves that when we speak up, Donald Trump loses.

We are determined to fight for the rights of young people, but we understand that this is not the easiest time to continue your work.

In solidarity,

Future Coalition
