How Does the California Prison Population Compare to Other States?

California’s prison population differs substantially from that in other states, due to major criminal justice reforms here as well as pandemic-era policies. With voters this past November approving Proposition 36—which increases penalties for certain theft and drug offenses—California’s prison population may be poised for change in the future.
