Friend, Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, will be up for a committee hearing next week! She has little professional experience in education policy, and a dismal record on civil rights. Like so many of Trump’s nominees, Linda McMahon is a billionaire who has been nominated for a prominent role in government because Trump knows she’ll do his bidding. Linda McMahon will be on the front lines of defending and implementing Trump’s extremist, anti-civil rights agenda. Trump has signed several Executive Orders that attack transgender and intersex students and censor what can be taught in schools. Just yesterday, he ordered that transgender women and girls be forbidden from participating in school sports. McMahon will be tasked with enforcing this order. But it doesn’t stop there. Project 2025 calls for eliminating the Department of Education entirely, and some Republicans in Congress are getting behind the effort. According to recent reports, Trump’s administration is already preparing an executive order to make it happen. The catch? They’re planning to wait until after McMahon’s nomination hearing to release it – hoping to avoid tough questions from Senators that could derail her confirmation.[1] This is no small change. The Department of Education is, at its core, a civil rights agency. Eliminating the Department of Education would have devastating impacts on students, teachers, schools, and families. And it’s not just dangerous – it's a deeply unpopular move. More than 60% of registered voters oppose eliminating the department, yet Trump and his MAGA allies are charging ahead anyway.[1] Strong schools are our promise to the next generation. It is our civic responsibility to protect the Department of Education from these sinister right-wing attacks. Thank you for your advocacy.
