John, another chaotic week courtesy of the Trump administration and his GOP-led Congress.
I will say, there’s one thing they HAVE been doing a great job at: using the chaos to distract the public from their unpopular moves and the real work that needs to be done.
It’s hard to know what’s real and what’s not with so much going on, we’re feeling it here too. That’s why I connected with Mary Gay to prepare an update on some important legislation moving already this session. My hope is to get these out to you regularly to make sure you know exactly what’s going on in Congress while the media is consumed trying to keep up with Trump (good luck).
Mary Gay is listening and working for YOU, inside the chaos, fighting back where she can. Take a quick second to read about what’s going on…
SESSION RECAP
The House GOP pushed through two pieces of legislation to “crack down” on immigration. These bills are legislative clickbait from the GOP that do NOT provide resources to strengthen immigration enforcement but rather fuel the dangerous and hateful rhetoric from the GOP. Read more specifics on all introduced immigration legislation here.
“Existing laws already provide for detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants who are convicted of serious crimes ... Rather than providing resources to strengthen immigration enforcement, this bill exploits a young woman’s tragic death to score cheap political points.”

House Republicans pushed through H.R. 28 — a bill that would amend Title IX to prohibit schools from allowing transgender female athletes to participate in athletic programs/activities “designated for women or girls.” Even though this bill passed the GOP House, Mary Gay voted NO and condemned it as a GOP “red herring.” Read more about this legislation and why Mary Gay voted no here.
“I’ve met with transgender children and teens and their parents, and seen the huge struggles these families face – including lack of understanding and outright prejudice. Instead of protecting these vulnerable kids, H.R. 28 weaponizes the federal government to further discriminate against them.”

Mary Gay and her Pennsylvania colleagues pressured the Philadelphia and Coatesville VA Medical Centers in a letter asking for answers on Trump’s funding freeze. Mary Gay wants to ensure that the funding freeze does not prevent the VA from meeting its expanded duties under the PACT Act or other necessary veteran services. They set a deadline for answers of February 13th — and I will keep you updated on the response and how PA veterans may be impacted by Trump’s unconstitutional actions.

Mary Gay announced over $11 million in funding for the installation of up to 200 electric vehicle charging ports throughout the Philadelphia region. This funding was secured through the Federal Highway Administration Grant.
“Thanks to funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this investment in that new charging network will make it easier for EV drivers across our region to charge their cars, reduce our carbon footprint, and support the American workers building these charging stations.”

I know things feel confusing and maybe even alarming right now. I hope these updates show you that Mary Gay is on your side doing the work and will stand up against GOP overreach under this new Republican trifecta. As the session unfolds, Mary Gay will be introducing more legislation, securing more funding for Southeast PA, and working to hold the GOP accountable.
More soon,
Luke
