Nathan Coulter Banner
Friends and neighbors,
In a decisive victory for democracy, House DFLers have successfully blocked Republican attempts to overturn the will of the voters and undermine the integrity of our elections.
Last night, House DFL and GOP leadership came to an agreement to co-govern over the next two years. This agreement required some compromise, including electing Representative Lisa Demuth as Speaker of the House for the next two years, but our negotiated solution holds fast to the principles we’ve been fighting for: allowing all members elected by their communities to serve, and shared control in the very likely event of a tie in March.
Make no mistake: this agreement is a victory not only for DFLers, but for our democracy. We've ensured that Rep. Brad Tabke can serve the term to which he was properly elected, directly thwarting Republican attempts to overturn the election results. We fought to protect the fundamental rights of Minnesota voters and succeeded in preventing Republican efforts to undermine our democratic institutions. The power-sharing agreement we've secured is a testament to DFL resilience and our fundamental belief that every voter has the same power.
While this is a victory, we shouldn’t let our guard down. Should Donald Trump or Minnesota Republicans continue to push the limits of our democratic norms, Minnesota DFLers will stand ready to resist their extremism. My commitment is to our neighbors in Bloomington and the people of Minnesota.
This moment is about more than a single legislative session. DFLers have drawn a line in the sand, protecting the most fundamental aspect of our democracy: the right of people to choose their representatives.
I want to take a moment to thank all of the community leaders, allies, and constituents who took the time to meet with me and help guide my priorities heading into the legislative session. I look forward to returning to St Paul and continuing to advance our shared values through legislation.
