As we reflect upon the past year and what the future holds for us, Paramedic Services Week is a wonderful opportunity to stop and thank paramedics for the tireless work they do each and every day in the communities they serve all across Canada.
Canadians are very fortunate to have you helping them during these unprecedented times. Never before has it been more apparent just how vital paramedics are in keeping Canadians safe and healthy. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought out the best in you, our paramedics and amidst the chaos you have been a shining light, a ray of hope, a sense of calm, providing a helping hand in these dark times. Paramedics have faithfully cared for their country and its citizens throughout this crisis.

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Paramedic Services Week, which runs from May 24 to 30:
“Today marks the start of Paramedic Services Week. It’s a time for all of us to celebrate and thank the women and men on the front lines of our healthcare system.
“Across the country, more than 40,000 paramedics and communications officers stand ready to help Canadians in need. Day in and day out, they answer our calls for help and put themselves in harm’s way to save lives. And this year, we’re particularly grateful for their sacrifice and their service in the face of COVID-19. So to all the paramedics across Canada: thank you.
“Throughout this pandemic, paramedics have shown up for Canadians, and they have shown us the very best of courage, compassion, and dedication. And we’re determined to be there for them too. We will continue to do everything we can to support them during this difficult time. Because it’s by being there for one another that we’ll get through this crisis.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I thank all paramedics for their service and for the incredible work they do every single day.”

Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada
On behalf of all Canadians, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
Protecting the public is the cornerstone of your mission. You work tirelessly in our communities across the country, willing to put yourselves at risk in the face of an invisible enemy that does not discriminate. You are first on the scene, wherever people are vulnerable, worried or in need of comfort and care. Despite the fact that yours is a profession where every minute counts, despite the unknowns of this unprecedented pandemic and the pressures you and your families are facing, you keep your cool and continue to do what you do best: help your fellow citizens in distress. For your courage and your service, the nation will be eternally grateful to you.
I have every confidence that with science, data-driven decision making and the steadfast resolve of our citizens, we will emerge into brighter days, led by your efforts to contain the virus.
In this spirit, I invite you to watch the video or download the audio file of the Ottawa Bach Choir’s recording of Dona nobis pacem, from Mass in B Minor, BWV 232, by J. S. Bach. Music has always brought me peace and hope; perhaps this gift from the Choir will inspire you to continue to light the way for us all.
Please stay well and look after yourselves.
