John – we know you’re probably feeling a little dazed and confused. The back-and-forth about the federal funding freeze has been overwhelming, and it’s hard to keep track of what’s really going on.
Here’s the truth:
While you’ve likely heard that the initial executive order freezing federal spending was rescinded – a headline that’s been repeated in the press – the reality is much more troubling. Yes, some federal funds are flowing again, but critical climate, energy, and environmental dollars? They’re still up in the air.
And that’s not an accident.
The Trump administration has intentionally thrown the federal government into chaos mode. This isn’t incompetence — it’s strategy. They’re targeting programs that matter most to our future, like the nearly $5 billion Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program and the $7 billion Solar for All program, which both help bring clean, affordable energy to low-income communities.
But why these programs?
Because undermining climate action is at the core of Trump’s agenda. They know that delaying and disrupting these funds directly weakens the progress we’ve fought for in combating climate change.
SEEC Members have been the tip of the spear working to get the word out there about these investments that Trump has frozen – here’s just a few that our climate champions are raising alarm bells about:
A Georgia nonprofit is now unable to access its $156 million grant aimed at helping low-income households deploy solar and storage, thereby reducing energy bills by up to 20%.
A rural grocery store could not use its U.S. Dept of Agriculture grant to upgrade their aging refrigeration system.
Illinois school districts have not been able to access $15 million to integrate their zero-emission buses with on-site battery systems to provide power during outages.
A Tribal village is unable to access funds to clean up their lands as a result of WWII pollution.
