We wanted to send a quick update from Washington, where Elissa took the floor of the Senate bright and early at 6:00 am this morning.
She was one of 35 Democratic U.S. Senators participating in a 30-hour session—starting yesterday afternoon and continuing through the night—to use the maximum allowed debate time on the floor, and draw attention to recent threats facing our democracy, our rights, and our Constitution.
A key focus was President Trump’s nominee to lead the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought. When Elissa questioned him in the Homeland Security Committee, he couldn’t commit to pushing back against orders that might violate the U.S. Constitution. This fits into a troubling pattern we’ve seen in recent weeks—a willingness to bend the Constitution to serve political ends.
On top of that, there’s a group of billionaires with access to the White House who are leading the administration around by their noses. No one in Michigan voted for Elon Musk, and now he has access to every American’s personal and private data, raising serious questions about how that information could be used for his personal or financial gain.
Our country is going through something right now. As Elissa emphasized in her speech—her first on the Senate floor—her responsibility as a senior elected leader is to protect the Constitution and the foundations of our democracy.
