Dealing with the coronavirus pandemic may be fogging our vision but it has made our choices clearer than ever.
The coronavirus outbreak has caused tens of millions of Americans to lose their jobs and the health insurance that is tied to their employment. America’s billionaires saw their fortunes grow 15% from mid-March to mid-May, making them nearly a half-trillion dollars richer. Fundamental flaws and injustices in our economic system have never been more obvious. A stiff wealth tax has never been more justified.
The pandemic shines a bright light on the racial divide as it claims the lives of black Americans at three times the rate of white people. COVID-19 is nothing if not a cruel reminder of how elusive and racially stratified health security is. And it has made it more plainly evident than ever how unwise it is to tie health insurance to employment. Never before has the need for Medicare for All been more clear.
The pandemic is going to create a new normal. We're going to keep raising our voices in favor of a new normal of greater justice, elevated humanity and gentler treatment of our surroundings and each other.
