Americans did not elect Elon Musk in November.

But every day, he tries to take charge of more and more of our government — and the rest of us will pay the price.

First, Elon Musk was given access to the Treasury Department’s federal payments system, which millions of Americans rely on for Social Security checks, Medicare benefits, federal salaries, grants, and tax refunds. This puts sensitive information about millions of people at risk.

Now, Musk is trying to shut down USAID, the government’s lead agency for distributing humanitarian aid and development assistance in countries all over the world. USAID helps fight disease, provide food to those who need it, and promote democracy worldwide. The consequences of shutting the agency down could be disastrous — making all of us less safe.

What’s happening right now is unconstitutional and extraordinarily dangerous.

But Republicans have already proven that they won’t check Trump or Musk’s power, so we need to elect as many Democrats as possible who will.
