Advocacy: Protecting Sensitive Locations Act
The Trump administration recently rescinded protections for sensitive areas, now permitting officials to engage in immigration enforcement actions in previously safe locations like schools and hospitals. In response, New York Representative Adriano Espaillat and Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal will soon reintroduce the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act. This legislation prohibits immigration enforcement actions by DHS officers or agents at or within 1,000 feet of sensitive locations; requires annual training for DHS officers on the sensitive locations policy; and more. Advocacy: No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act
Trump has issued an executive order to strip federal funding from cities and states that do not assist the federal government with mass deportations. This action would take away federal funding for essential public services, health, and education programs that benefit all people, not just immigrants. Although he currently lacks the power to enforce this, the No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act, legislation that would give him this authority, is currently moving through Congress. A vote on this legislation is expected soon. There are two easy ways to educate your Member of Congress about the impact this bill could have on your communities: 1) Organizations can sign a letter organized by NILC and CLASP; 2) Individuals can join the CHN Action letter campaign at the link below to send a message to Congress urging them to reject this legislation. Advocacy: Medicaid Day of Action
This month, Congress plans to vote on budget resolution policy which will include cuts to Medicaid. This legislation would strip insurance from millions of people, including some lawfully present immigrants and their families, and significantly increase healthcare costs. Community Catalyst, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), Families USA, and NHeLP, have assembled resources for a Medicaid Day of Action to take place Tomorrow, February 6, encouraging all people to call their lawmakers at 866-426-2631 and tell them to stop the Medicaid cuts.
