Legislative Update – February 5, 2025

Dear neighbors,

This past week, I’ve been meeting with our local and county government partners to discuss priorities at the state legislature and how we can best prepare for the Trump Administration’s potentially destabilizing actions.

I participated in both the Washington County and Dakota County 2025 Legislative Priorities events, chatting with county commissioners, county staff, and fellow state legislators about how to ensure local needs are met during this session.

I also attended the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s public meeting in South St. Paul to discuss updates to the draft air permit rules for Sanimax USA LLC. Thanks to all the members of the public who came to ask questions and make their voices heard!

Lawns to Legumes: Fall 2025 Applications Open

Do you want your lawn to be more pollinator-friendly? Anyone who lives in Minnesota and has an outdoor space for planting is eligible to apply for a fall 2025 Lawns to Legumes grant.

The program aims to increase habitat for at-risk pollinators by providing reimbursement-based funding, workshops, coaching, and gardening resources. People can apply to be reimbursed for up to $400 in costs associated with establishing new pollinator habitat. The program is available to both Minnesota homeowners and renters. Other Updates

The Department of Natural Resources’ public input period is open for the Keystone Woods Wildlife Management Area in Washington County. The WMA offers a broad array of hunting, fishing, and other backcountry recreational pursuits in close proximity to the Twin Cities.

Area wildlife managers are interested in getting input on amenities and opportunities individuals would like to see at the WMA in the future here [ [link removed] ].

Two public meetings are scheduled for area staff to give an overview of Keystone Woods, its history, and potential opportunities to interested individuals: A virtual meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 12 from 6-8 p.m. and an in-person meeting will be held at Hugo City Hall on Thursday, Feb. 13 from 6-8 p.m. More details on these meetings are available here [ [link removed] ].

Finally, I recently visited Hope Creamery with MN Department of Agriculture Commissioner Thom Peterson. Hope Creamery was first established back in the 1920s and still uses local ingredients to make great old-fashioned butter. Learn more about them at their website [ [link removed] ] or in this news story [ [link removed] ].
