The Riley Gaines Act - HB 267
Today we not only celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we also celebrate the introduction of The Riley Gaines Act by Representative Josh Bonner (D-73).
If passed, the Riley Gaines Act will:
Define and codify sex terms (‘sex’, ‘male,’ ‘female,’ ‘woman,’ ‘man’)
Safeguard women’s-only spaces (ensuring separate locker rooms, changing rooms, restrooms, etc.)
Mandate athletic teams be designated as either: male, female or co-ed
Prohibit males from competing in athletic opportunities, taking roster spots and scholarships intended for women at all levels, including collegiate sports
Provide consistency in the Georgia code (replace ‘gender’ with ‘sex’)
We want to commend Speaker Jon Burns and the General Assembly for taking action to safeguard women’s opportunities and standing up for the integrity of female athletics.
“We are proud to have played a pivotal role in drafting and advocating for The Riley Gaines Act (HB 267) and the Fair and Safe Athletic Opportunities Act (SB 1). Our efforts have helped shape the strong language in these bills, and we are encouraged to see Georgia take a bold stand in the safety of women’s spaces and protecting the integrity of women’s sports. This legislation is a step forward in ensuring that Title IX protections are protected and solidified, safeguarding the rights of female athletes in Georgia. We commend the Georgia legislature for their leadership and look forward to seeing this legislation passed, providing a lasting framework to protect the opportunities and dignity of women and girls in this state.” said Chelsea Thompson, General Counsel, Frontline Policy Council and Frontline Policy Action.
National Momentum
President Trump signed an Executive Order defining male and female terms to protect women’s spaces, and we also have a recent court victory in Tennessee v. Cardona where a Kentucky judge ruled against the Biden administration's attempt to redefine ‘sex’ under Title IX. Georgia was a key participant in this lawsuit, demonstrating its commitment to protecting women and girls’ rights and safety. Then, later TODAY at 3 PM, President Trump will sign another Executive Order, specifically to keep males out of girl’s sports.
While we are certainly excited about what this means for girls in Georgia and throughout the nation, we are only able to do this meaningful work because of your generous support. Please prayerfully consider joining the fight with us in these efforts with a tax-deductible donation today! [[link removed]]
