Meet Our Newest Team Members: Lahiruni & Jesse
Lahiruni Dias Amarawardena (she/her) is the inaugural Olga May Wong Policy Fellow, supporting OCA's national policy, advocacy, and organizing strategy and programming. She is a senior undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she is pursuing her Bachelor’s of Arts in Government and Politics - International Relations and a Minor certification in both Asian American Studies and History. As a student organizer with four years of experience, and as current Co-President of the Asian American Student Union, she believes that collective education and grassroots mobilization are key ways to accomplish wins for the AANHPI community and propel pressing issues to the national stage. To commemorate her work and contributions to the APIDA community, she was awarded with the 2024-25 Timothy J. Ng Scholarship in Asian American Studies. Outside of her academic and professional passions, Lahiruni enjoys her 14th year as a Bharatanatyam classical dancer at Nrityanjali Dance
Inc., cooking new recipes for her friends, and watching foreign films.

Jesse Wu (he/him) is an intern at OCA National Center placed by the UCDC Internship Program, supporting OCA's national policy and programs work. He is a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies-Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Jesse grew up in an environment that blended a traditional Chinese household with a diverse American society. Over time, as his interest in international relations and Asia-Pacific affairs grew, so did his investment in Asian American participation in civil society. He sees his upbringing as a bridge between two distinct identities, and the driving force behind his enthusiasm for civic participation. At UC San Diego, Jesse has dedicated himself to developing the next generation of leaders. Alongside his studies, his involvement in Model United Nations at UCSD organizing the TritonMUN conference has provided leadership opportunities for hundreds of high school
delegates, while raising thousands of dollars to fund similar opportunities for members of the collegiate organization. He also engages in various mentorship programs across the UCSD community, from connecting with international students with the International Services and Engagement Office, to welcoming new students as an orientation leader for Eleanor Roosevelt College. These experiences have only strengthened Jesse’s belief in the merits of civic engagement and youth development—a belief he holds onto as he pursues a career in the Foreign Service and continues lifting up his community.

OCA - Greater Seattle Chapter
A mural in Nihonmachi Alley, part of Seattle’s Chinatown International District, was recently vandalized, sparking outrage and conversations among community advocates, including members of our own OCA - Greater Seattle Chapter. The mural, smeared with black paint and marked with Bible verses, left many questioning the intent behind the act.

Stella Liu, a University of Washington student and intern with OCA Greater Seattle, shared her confusion about the meaning of the verses but emphasized the importance of raising awareness to ensure incidents like this do not go unnoticed. Fellow intern Dylan Lai described the act as a divisive tactic meant to alienate certain groups, calling it “deeply disrespectful.” Both interns urged the community to stand in solidarity and speak out against such acts of hate.

OCA - Greater Seattle Chapter and local residents are committed to standing together and ensuring the neighborhood remains a vibrant and inclusive space.

5th Annual Chinese Expulsion Rally and March by OCA - Greater Seattle Chapter | February 23, 2025
Amidst intense labor competition, from February 7, 1886, a mob of whites attacked the Chinese in Seattle. The Seattle Riot followed an earlier attack in Tacoma whereby Chinese were forced out of the city.

Now in 2025, during an era of increasing antagonism against immigrants, documented and undocumented, we feel it is especially important to participate in this annual march commemorating the expulsion of the Chinese from Seattle. Our march begins at Seattle's Chinatown-International District where we follow the path of our ancestors pushed to the Seattle waterfront. However, during our march, we are immediately marching BACK to the Chinatown-International District - demonstrating that, like our ancestors, we are here to stay.

The chief organizer is the United Hub and we, at OCA-Greater Seattle, are one of the primary sponsors.
